New research into the digital generation.
The main findings? Boys do more gaming than girls (surprise) but girls do more of everything else: girls aged 12 to 15 are more likely to have a mobile phone, use the Internet, listen to the radio and read newspapers or magazines. Other main findings:
- Almost all children between 12 and 15 in the UK with the internet at home said they were ‘confident’ using the web and did so on average for eight hours a week.
- Girls are more likely than boys to use the web as a communication tool.
- Eight out of 10 children have their own mobile phone by their 11th birthday.
- Two-thirds of 12 to 15 year olds said most of what they found on the Internet was ‘true’, with only one in five disagreeing.
- Despite the many other distractions, children are still watching almost 14 hours of television a week.
- Around one third of 12-15 year olds have direct experience of creating ringtones and playlists. One in five overall say they have set up their own website. Around half have either experience of or interest in setting up their own website and making a short film using a digital camcorder, and rather fewer are interested in making a short film using a mobile phone.
