Traditional TV market in decline as plasma screens and other high tech types of goggle box take over.
This week the BBC reports that a glass making factory in Wales is to close with the loss of over 400 jobs. The factory makes glass specially for cathode ray televisions and blamed the closure for the decline of popularity of traditional TV sets. Of course, the shift in manufacturing over to cheaper, more easily exploitable labour overseas can’t have helped.
In June, Sony announced 650 job losses at its Bridgend plants due to reduced demand for traditional-style TVs. The Japanese firm blamed competition from flat-screen televisions and said
demand for cathode ray tube-based televisions within the UK and Europe has fallen significantly
