Ukrainian-born Nathalia Edenmont – like a number of artists nowadays – creates art out of dead animals.
Unlike a lot of people these days, she despatches the mice, cats and rabbits herself. Dismembered mice, chickens and cats form the centrepiece of her photographic art.
The furore that surrounds her art is already threatening to overshadow it. In 2003 a group of four masked members of the Swedish Nazi Party came into a gallery wielding baseball bats and destroyed four artworks. Andrew Butler — a PETA member — stood and slept in front of the same gallery for 122 consecutive hours, holding a sign that read ‘Cruelty is not art’. Colleen O’Brien, manager of communications at PETA headquarters in Norfolk, VA, believes that “the only place her work should bthe only place her work should be on display is in a police evidence room. Calling it art is appalling.” It certainly stirs debate. Edenmontʹs name gets some 7,000 hits on Google, mainly sites discussing the ethics of her work.
Thankfully, this unholy alliance of Nazis and animal rights protestors has not shaken the art world: Edenmont recently made the cover of Beaux Arts magazine. Critic Charlie Finch says, “Yes, these images are powerful, even beautiful, but it strikes me as a fascist beauty.”
Edenmount was recently reported to Swedish authorities by the National Veterinary Association for not having a vet present when she kills the animals. Ironically, she had just received a $12,000 arts grant from the Swedish government.

Respect for life, also for animal life, is a very important value, I think.
No talent, yet a craving for special attention and famousness. She should have herself dismembered and shown in photography this way.
She is just a big Zero. But those who promote her “art”, and who honour it with a prestigious price, are even more destestable.

This is appalling. I think a person like this is unwell and needs psychiatric help. What is worse is that her barbaric acts are actually receiving help in the support of grants from the Swedish government. What is this world coming to? She should be penalised and her work banned immediately.

This is a sick person and no artist at all. This woman is not a human being. She’s a monster.

How remarkable that anyone could be fooled into thinking that the revolting spectacle, that has evolved from the so obviously sick mind of this woman, could possible be considered in any way to be art.
I pity her that she should be so unbelievably unevolved as to think that what she is doing is okay. As a musical artist I stive to find the light in myself before I give to the audience. I want to be a clear performer for the greatest power on the planet. Love, light, creation. In love we have pure creation and avoid distruction to the soul and others(people,animal,planet etc). It is an artists job to bring that light into the world to raise us up. There is no excuse for the opposite. It takes focus and patience to put pure love in the world and you will shure be a recipiant of what you put into it. I say find your heart and live in the light of creation. If that does not interest you crawl around in the dark and the mud of the life you have created. You will eventually starve yourself and you will start over again with the same choice. Save the animals!

As you live in Sweden, it should be easy for you to find a DVD of the film “Sa som i Himmelen” (“As it is in Heaven”). Do see this moving account of what it really means to be an artist. On the present showing, the exact opposite of you, I fear.
Well I think this women has got talent in the sense she thinks outside the box, but I don’t think she should be killing animals for the purpose of art.
I mean how many animals are euthanized every year? Why not just go to a vet clinic and offer to take their dead carcasses? Or why doesn’t she just go on some busy road and pic up a dead squirrel or pigeon?
I really think this women needs to re-evaluate her artistic ideals. And maybe her sanity as well.
As a thought to everyone who passionately rants on and on about how horrid these creations are, I say this;
I agree that KILLING the animals for purpose of art is distasteful.
However if she had simply found animals that were already dead you would still see it as a horrible or disgusting sin.
Well if that were the case, she would be nothing more than a glorified taxidermist.
Also, how many of you put out De-con to kill mice? How many of you eat fried chicken or eat eggs? Lamb?How many of you have items with rabbit fur? How many of you hunt rabbits or other small innocent creatures? How often do people take their pets in to “put them down”?
