In an example of cunning peer to peer marketing, the Vermont department of health in Canada has enlisted hairdressers as outreach workers
Dubbed Operation Hairspray, the scheme relies on hairdressers being the women’s most trusted confidants. Hairdressers are briefed to advise their clients on all sorts of health issues and in particular to look out for risky behaviour associated with the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases
If a client suggests she has been partying so hard that she cannot remember the details - opening the possibility of unprotected sex - a hairstylist can intervene. According to Cynthia Himmel of the AIDS Project of Southern Vermont: "It’s a really fragile moment, a chance to say, ‘Are you really taking care of yourself … Are you putting yourself at risk?’"
"We’re not promoting sex", said Sharon Morrissey, owner of Sharon’s Style Shoppe. "We’re just promoting healthy lives"
The scheme is now being emulated in New Jersey where beauty salons are being used to impart safe sex packs and info
