Last weekend David Smith became the first human cannonball to fly across a border as he was fired from 150ft from Mexico into the United States.
Mr Smith flashed his passport to some 600 onlookers on Tijuana beach before being fired into a net in Border Field State Park in San Diego. The stunt formed part of an exhibition entitled One Flew Over the Void by the Venezuelan artist Javier Tellez. The other element of Tellez’s display involved 35 mental patients from Mexicali, dressed in circus costumes and performing on the beach alongside the human cannonball.
Tellez, himself a US immigrant, said he was inspired by the desperation of people trying to cross the border: “My work as an artist is to create bridges — connection between two different sides — and get rid of the
walls.”
